Step One |
You'll see the XChat: Network List window pop up amoung a variety of other windows. This window is the one you want to be looking at first. Before you click anything, type in your Nick Name, Second Choice, Third Choice, User Name, and Real Name. Some are optional to fill in, but I just fill in all of them. The second and third choice names are for times that someone else may be on the IRC server using your name. It will log you in as your second choice and if someone is logged on as your second choice, it'll log you in as your third choice. But usually impersonators are banned pretty quickly, so the second and third choice names are usually not important. Anyways, click the + Add button and a new network name should pop up in the list which leads to step two! |
 |
Step Two |
A network name will pop up after you click Add and now type in what you'd like to name the network. I chose IAN because it's the abbreviation of the actual network url. On to step three! |
 |
Step Three |
Simply click the Edit... button while your highlighted over the network you just created. A new window should pop up and this'll take us to our next step! |
 |
Step Four |
In this new window, you'll see another + Add button. Click that to start off. Then input the name "irc.adelais.net" without the quotes, as seen in the picture. When you're done with that, proceed to step five! |
 |
Step Five |
Now stay in this window because you've got a few more things to configure. Under the Connecting selections, check Auto connect to this network at startup. This a pretty handy feature so that it'll automatically connect you to the network so you don't have to do it manually. Self-explanitory! Next, input "#shiftlimits" without the quotes in the Channels to join: input box, as you see in the picture. Finally, type in a password you plan on using for your nickname in the Nickserv password: input box. When you're done, press the X Close button and proceed to the next step! |
 |
Step Six |
You're almost done! Wasn't so bad, was it? Anyhow, you'll be back at the first window you configured things on. When you're highlighted on the network you created and named, check Skip network list on startup.Whenever you start X-Chat, it'll skip this window and automatically connect you to the network and channel so you don't have to do it manually. Finally click Connect. Now you're on your way the wide world of Shiftlimits' IRC channel! |

Configuring your User Name
This is an option you should do when you enter the IRC for the first time.
1. Registering your Nickname
Registering your nickname is simple. Once you're in the #shiftlimits IRC channel, type in the following: /msg nickserv register 'Nickname' 'password' 'email'. Make sure when you type this in, you do not include the apostrophes. Where it says 'Nickname' type in the nickname you're planning on using. Where it says 'password', type in the password you put in during the X-Chat configuration. And for the 'email', type in a valid email (one that you check). So an example NickServ registration would look like:
/msg nickserv register Justin lolcakes justin@shiftlimits.com
This basically gives you all rights to the name. So if someone comes on using the nickname you registered, you can perform what is called a Ghost command and kick them off your name. Anyhow, you'll be asked to check your email after doing the NickServ register command. So go check your email. Inside the email, it'll give you another command you'll have to input. So, do that! Then your nick will be completely registered to the network.
Simple IRC Commands
These are simple IRC commands you may or may not be able to perform. Remember to never include apostrophes in IRC commands!
Command |
Description |
| /msg nickserv ghost 'nickname' 'password' |
If someone is in the IRC with your name, you can ghost them off your nickname. (Your nick must be registered to you!) |
| /msg nickserv identify 'password' |
Identifying is only neccesary if you didn't configure XChat to recognize your password in the startup. If you followed this tutorial, then this command shouldn't be neccesary, unless something else happens where your status is taken away. |
| /kick 'username' |
Kicks a user from the channel. (Half-Op status or above required) |
| /ban 'username' |
Bans a user from the channel. (Half-Op status or above required) |
| /away 'away message' |
Shows your status as away with a reason to you being gone. |
